Israeli shoegaze. It’s not a corner of the music world that gets much attention here in the U.S., but there seem to be some really spacey influences among the distortion-drenched scene out there. Enter Vaadat Charigim. Helmed by Juval Haring, the band’s debut album narrates an inevitable nuclear apocalypse. The World is Well Lost is a strong dose of melancholy, strained through gentle-slash-heavy guitars reminiscent of 1990s shoegaze titans (like Swervedriver and Drop Nineteens at various points) and the thickness of Haring’s native Hebrew. But even with the album frantically signalling end times, Haring and Co. suggest relentless partying. The music can be dour, sure; it’s a shoegaze band. The whole of the law remains the same: Have fun. Go wild. Our world as we know it is about to implode, so why not toss on some Vaadat Charigim and rock out? Better yet, catch ‘em tonight in less-than-apocalyptic Lakewood, Ohio. (Sandy)
