With Kataklysm, Destruction, Speed Kill Hate, Graveworm, and the Absence. Thursday, June 1, at the Agora Theatre.

Metal's innate theatricality is never more present than when it's time to choose a name. Kataklysm, Vader, and Destruction will all descend upon Cleveland this week, arm-in-hairy-tattooed-arm (well, probably not literally) for one of the better death-metal bills of the year. But why only one "tion" band on the tour? Time was, you couldn't have a death-metal show without at least two "action-noun" acts (Incantation, Immolation, Suffocation, Dissection, Defecation, Creative Exhaustion, Auto-Erotic Asphyxiation . . . okay, a couple of those are made up, but you get the idea). In any case, this promises to be a fist-pumpin', hair-spinnin' good time for [begin guttural death-metal voice] ALL WHO DARE ENTER THE PIT!

Vader's most recent EP, The Art of War, is a six-song fist in the face, with the usual Slayerisms on proud display. Kataklysm's 2006 effort, In the Arms of Devastation (there's that suffix again!), is a hardcore-tinged assault that has actual melodies peeking out here and there. And Destruction's brand of melodic retro thrash never gets old. The usual array of baby bands will open the gig. GRRRGGHH!!!
