Valley Whirl

Even when there's no snow on the ground, it's pretty safe to say that it's impossible to see all 33,000 acres of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in a day. That's why the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's hour-and-45-minute tour on the Cabin Fever Express lets riders sit in the warmth of a railcar and take in the wilderness' beauty, from blue-heron nests and beaver dams to the herds of deer that roam the park.After CSX abandoned the rail line in 1985, the park service snapped it up a couple of years later to preserve Northeast Ohio railroad history. On the tour, guides will catch you up on the past, telling stories about (LG) the canals that wind through the valley and the kinds of goods once transported by (LG) the locomotives. "It's a good way to see all of the park in all its glory in the winter months," says Kelly Steele, the railroad's assistant education director. Hop on board at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturdays at the Akron Northside Station (27 Ridge Street in Akron), 10:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sundays at the Rockside Station (7900 Old Rockside Road in Valley View), or 11:15 a.m. at the depot in Peninsula (1630 West Mill Street) through Sunday, February 24.
