Veterans Memorial Bridge Tour

Since it was featured in a scene in The Avengers, our Veterans Memorial Bridge may no longer be one of Cleveland’s best-kept secrets. But that still doesn’t mean its lower-level spaces are often open to the public. If you want to see them, you’ll have to do it today during the annual self-guided tours. Stretching a whopping 3112 feet from downtown to Ohio City, the bridge was completed in the early 1900s. The lower deck was originally built as a subway for streetcars; that ended in the ’50s when cars became the preferred mode of transport. Besides the streetcar tracks and the stations, the amazing views of the city and the Cuyahoga River are other reasons to go. You’ll also get to see some film clips and exhibitions about the streetcars and their place in local history. “People just love walking through it,” says Koula Celebrezze, public information officer for the Department of Public Works. “They’re amazed that this thing even exists!” Tour hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s free.
