Back when Wavves formed in 2008, they were a bunch of kids playing surfy punk rock and having fun. Four albums and six years later, their sound has grown up, especially on their latest album, last year’s Afraid of Heights. While they sound a bit more polished nowawdays, they haven’t lost their ability to really rock out. Tracks “Dog” and “Demon to Lean On” show off that newer sound with slightly more subdued guitar with touches of distortion at just the right moments. Meanwhile, “Mystic” and “Beat Me Up” recall that wonderfully messier sound with fast-paced drums and guitar dancing in sync while Nathan Williams’ voice soars with the chorus lines. Touches of echoing harmonic chords light up in places, lending their trademark surf rock feel. Even the lyrics seem to have matured; these songs touch on the dysfunctions of relationships while past song lyrics have been more carefree. (Liz Trenholme)
