Readers sound off on dead trees and more

Not Easy Being Green

We all owe a debt of gratitude to Maude Campbell for the incredible story "Dead Wood" [January 19, 2011]. I had no idea energy companies were considering burning live trees to power our homes and cities. What an atrocity. My husband works at the Holden Arboretum (tree museum) and he was astonished too. I don't know why we don't see more real journalism like yours in The PD, but then, oh yes, I guess I do know why. I am so glad a publication like Scene is around to shed light on such a huge story. Keep up the excellent work.

Toby's Kingdom of Purity

Sad that nurses at Cleveland Clinic hospitals got a whopping 2 percent ["What Bad Economy? Clinic Payroll Includes 13 Millionaires," at the Scene & Heard blog]. Toby Cosgrove is too busy telling smokers they can't smoke and fat employees they need to lose weight — and oh, he wouldn't even hire them if he could. Who's next? Single parents? Gays? Muslims? (Strike the Muslims, he is in bed with them in Abu Dhabi.)

Playing Race Cards

John Kasich hires the people most qualified for the job, period ["John Kasich Hired a Black Person," at the Scene & Heard blog]. Just because you're black or Hispanic or whatever ethnic group doesn't mean you're entitled to a job. Why would anyone in their right mind give someone a job based on the color of his skin anyway?! I'm tired of the black community crying foul and playing the race card all of the time!

Hard Time, Easy Solutions

Perhaps you could ask local contractors to repair the jail's plumbing, exterminate the bugs and mice, disinfect/clean the cells, and then give them credit for their donations of time and supplies or free advertising ["Jailhouse Blues," February 2, 2011]. Failing that, ask for donations of cleaning supplies, bug and mice repellent, maybe fresh paint, and let the inmates clean up their cells as part of their punishment. If it improved their "living conditions," they might be willing to lend a hand. In other words, be creative in dealing with the problems.
