Readers sound off on Randy Lerner, Jimmy Haslam, and hamburgers

Lowered Expectations

I get the "be careful what you wish for" argument ["The Absent Owner," August 8, 2012]. But I also feel that the Browns were in a decade-long holding pattern under Lerner. Certainly, Haslam sees the advantages of a built-in fortune ("subsidized" is wildly accurate), yet I would think (hope) that the new owner is willing to build a tangible management structure that doesn't allow four head coaches and four-and-a-half GMs in one decade. Post-Lerner, all a Browns fan can truly ask for is basic competency.

Free Investment Advice

Doubling your money in 13 years is approximately six percent a year — hardly a windfall. And $10 mil per year profit (just throwing a number out) on a $500-mil investment is only a two-percent net profit margin. You can adjust the figures as you like, but at least you will be looking at it in the correct perspective. You guys act like [Lerner's sale of the Browns] is the greatest money-maker the world has ever seen. Tilted

Beware of Ivory Towers

Haslam will do just fine in blue-collar Cleveland, especially on the West Side ["Southern Man," August 8, 2012]. Where he will not be welcome is amongst the uptight, elitist, Ivory Tower East Siders.

And Burt Kay Can Be Your Waiter

Yay for Red ["Red the Steakhouse Rolling Into Old Volk's Spot Downtown," August 8, 2012]. I think it would be cool if they left the very red (and very big) Volk's sign up and just overlaid "Red the Steakhouse" signage onto that. Totally serious. Brad, are you reading this? Sam Bell

Back in My Day...

Coming from the perspective of a lifelong Rocky River Pirate and loyal West Sider, I can say that the food is still great at Beardens ["Hamburger History," August 1, 2012], but the decor went to retro during the reopen. Thinking back to a time of rigid brick walls and the risk of a train derailing above [diners' heads] gave Bearden's the municipal feel of being in the city versus the 'burbs. Still a fan of the food, though, and the shakes are drop-dead delicious. Great review. Tim Long
