Weezer/Pixies/The Wombats

When: Wed., July 11, 7:30 p.m. 2018
Price: $25-$69.50
Weezer earned its place beside much older bands as alternative rock icons with well-crafted post-punk tracks like “Buddy Holly,” clever ones like “Beverly Hills” and quirky ones like “Undone-The Sweater Song.” Front man Rivers Cuomo has both the awkward appeal of an outcast and the visionary level of writing talent to pull off his role as a key player in the discussion of modern songwriters. Weezer’s set list for its latest co-headlining tour is comprised primarily of older hits, a smart move by a band that knows its strengths. The Pixies, on the other hand, are the ultimate grungy indie rock band. Far less pop-punk than Weezer, the Pixies know how to write a hook and a melody just as well in their own way. “Here Comes Your Man” is a 1989 triumph because it sounds nothing like everything else from that era. It’s well-rounded, catchy and well-produced with a strong blend of instrumentals replacing the dance-y, corny vibe of everything ‘80s. “Hey” is another standout because of how weird it is. Only the Pixies could pull off a strange, eerie 40-second talking intro accompanied by killer riffs. (Halle Weber)
