What a Drag

Amateur road warriors tear up a Lake County lot for drag-racing bragging rights.

To mark its golden anniversary this year, the Painesville Speedway is letting fans get behind the wheels of their own cars to race each other in its weekly Parking Lot Drags series. For an entry fee, each competitor can race a one-lap preliminary round before the fastest pair of drivers reaches the finals for a two-lap showdown. "The fans want to see someone plant their brand-new car into the wall," says Jason Bateman, the track's general manager. "They want to see how much of a risk these draggers are willing to take."The winner of the finals then pockets two-thirds of the collected entry fees, with the remaining one-third going to the speedway. "People get all the action and drama that comes with auto racing," says Bateman. "Because of the size of the facility, the sights and sounds are right in your face, not to mention a little tire dust." The drags start at 4:30 this afternoon at the Painesville Speedway, 500 Fairport Nursery Road in Painesville Township. Entry fee is $15. Call 440-350-3505 or visit
