WJCU Metal Monday Night Out

With Soulless, Destructor, Abdullah, Amps II Eleven, and Black Trinity. Monday, February 7, at the House of Blues.

If longhairs ever feel any slight pangs of remorse about getting Nick Nolte-style drunk and supporting the devil's music, WJCU's Metal Monday Night Out should soothe a few consciences -- if not eardrums. With a tougher-than-leather lineup boasting such drunk and/or demonic local rippers as Amps II Eleven and Black Trinity, the concert is all about bad behavior for a good cause: Proceeds from the show will benefit the forthcoming increase in signal strength of the nonprofit WJCU-FM 88.7. This is a fine excuse for putting together one of the fiercest lineups of the year to date.

"Too often these days, local shows are put together without the fan's best interest in mind," says Bill Peters, host of WJCU's long-running Metal on Metal program, who assembled the show. "Bills are stacked with too many bands that have lineups determined by how many tickets a band sells, not by the quality of their music. Shows run off-schedule, start too early, run too late, are not properly promoted, suffer from bad sound, and are poorly attended. It's really turned a lot of people off from going to local shows."

Metal Monday Night aims to help change all that. Headlined by Cleveland's finest Euro-styled thrash troupe, Soulless, the show also features bullet-belt-clad metal throwbacks Destructor and death-rock favorites Abdullah.

"Musically, this is one of the best local shows I've ever been involved with," Peters says. "When volunteering to put a show together or organizing an event like this, I approach it from a fan's perspective, since I'm a fan of this style of music. I always make sure the end result is a show I would like to see. All five bands are first-class headliners in their own right. This would make for a great cross-country touring package to represent some of our city's best music."
