Wooden Wand/Fascist Insect/9 Volt Haunted House

When: Fri., March 8, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5
Wooden Wand, the stage name of songwriter James Jackson Toth, just released the haunting, near-perfect Blood Oaths of the New Blues on Fire Records, a throat-choking itinerary of southern gothic misfit narratives fittingly recorded in Homewood, Alabama. A full band provides ballast for Toth’s keeling, lambent crooning with fleshy, traditional country-rock instrumentation, while pianist Janet Elizabeth Simpson’s earthy vocals tangle with Toth’s wounded timbre in dark-edged lullabies like “Supermoon” and “Southern Colorado Song.” While some may resent the Starbucks-ready accessibility of Blood Oaths and yearn for the fried freak-folk eccentricities of Toth’s past collaborations, fans of twisted balladry in the vein of Will Oldham and Townes Van Zandt will appreciate Blood Oaths’ richer, more refined melodies. Openers 9 Volt Haunted House and Fascist Insect will supply a double dose of righteous noise for those not into the whole wimpy folk thing. (Hannah Franklin)
