Stand-up comedian Todd McCune says he used to overthink his act. No more. “I tried to force myself to write,” he says. “But it got weird -- like I was trying too hard. Comics are [supposed to be] natural smartasses.” So he started looking around for inspiration. And suddenly, everything became joke material – like the time he stumbled into a Marine Corps office while looking for a Blockbuster. “I almost joined,” he says. “But the recruiter scared the hell out of me. He said, ‘Boy, by the time you’re done with your basic training, I’m going to teach you how to kill a man with nothing but a toothpick!’ I’m like, Wow, don’t we get guns? I really don’t want to be running around Iraq with a pocket full of toothpicks.” McCune’s relationship is also fair game onstage these days. “I don’t know what [gay people] are complaining about,” he quips. “I wish I could tell my girlfriend, Baby, I’d like to get married, but it’s against the law.”
