Zoo Crew

Warm up in an 80 degree RainForest.

The zoo’s annual end-of-the-year blowout, Some Like It Hot, Some Like It Cold, features warm-blooded animals, cold-blooded reptiles, and a guy who makes art out of huge ice cubes. The program starts with a bus tour of the grounds’ Northern Trek, where reindeer, gray wolves, and sea lions romp in the snow. A family of polar bears also makes an appearance. “They’ll even go into the pool for a December plunge,” says spokeswoman Sue Allen.

Afterward, it’s a trip to the cozy RainForest to warm up in the 80-degree climate, which is ideal for the 600 animal, bird, and reptile species from Asia, Africa, and South America. Zookeepers will show off creatures like Bornean orangutans and South American fishing cats.

The tour concludes at Wolf Lodge, where kids can wind down by making crafts. Outside, ice sculptor Dave Zajac carves frozen art out of ice blocks. “Between Christmas and New Year’s, you have time off from work, the kids are home from school, and you’ve got out-of-town company,” says Allen. “This keeps people busy.”
