All About Odisi

The Nrityagram Dance Ensemble performs tonight at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The what, you say? They specialize in a classical Indian dance style, Odissi, and infuse it with contemporary concepts. The result is stunning. The two dancers, Surupa Sen and Bijayini Satpathy, move in perfect fluidity, sometimes synching up and always in harmony. This performance is part of their new program entitled Sa’yoga, which means “union of two heavenly bodies” in Sanskrit. Indeed, they resemble two goddesses as their movements take on the divine Yin and Yang. Their music ensemble will perform alongside them. A preconcert talk by Rajika Puri, an Indian classical dance expert, takes place at 6 p.m., while the performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Gartner Auditorium. Tickets start at $33. (Trenholme)
