Almost Free/George Morris/Electric Sunshine (in the Locker Room)
When: Sat., Aug. 31, 9 p.m. 2013
With 2009’s terrific debut, Modern Mistakes, Almost Free showed themselves to be a band in the driver’s seat of power pop sensibilities. “Stop Before You Start,” for instance, blends vocalist Andy Bird’s emotional melodies with the rest of the trio’s dynamic instrumentation. Likewise, “20 Something” opens with a screaming guitar line and chugging bass work from Bob Impemba. The band has released a couple of EPs since then, continually tying their music to the disillusionment of young men and women in the 21st century. Still very much under-the-radar, though, tonight’s gig in the basement of a Cleveland-area bowling alley is sure to be an authentic evening of great music. (Eric Sandy)
