Citizen Cope

Clarence Greenwood, better known as Citizen Cope, traveled down a long road to the singer/songwriter he is today. Always drawn to music, he learned about sound engineering and production during his college years, and his first musical endeavor was as DJ for the hip-hop group Basehead. After working on his own songs on the side and trying to find the right person to sing them, he realized he was the only person for the job. His first solo album brought a blend of soul, alternative rock and hip-hop sound and socially-charged lyrics; his latest work, One Lovely Day, has left the lingering hip-hop influence in the past, and focuses on a more laid-back — but still very soulful — atmosphere. Songs like “Something to Believe In” and “A Wonder” give off a happier, summery vibe, while songs like “Dancer From Brazil” and “One Lovely Day” are soothing enough to put anybody to sleep. “Summertime” even has a hint of R&B influence to it. Now that Greenwood is releasing his work on his own label, Rainwater Recordings, it’s safe to say his musical taste is free to roam wherever. (Sam Mendez)
