Tonight marks the monthly reappearance of the popular vegan dinner at Bistro 185. Aided by meat-free guest chef Jakub Mejstrik, owner Ruth Levine has cooked up a beauty. “Since it’s spring, we’ll be having a wild mushroom and pistachio salad, risotto made with asparagus and Meyer lemon, and strawberry rhubarb crumble — with almond-milk whipped cream, of course!” While not a vegan herself, Levine says she takes extra care to ensure no taboo tastes sneak into the dinner. “It’s almost like cooking kosher: We change the fryer oil and make sure everything is really clean. We want all our guests to feel comfortable.” Even so, Levine admits that all her guests don’t eschew animal products. “We actually get a lot of people who are just considering a vegan or vegetarian diet, and are curious about the cuisine. I think this helps tremendously to demonstrate how creative and delicious vegan meals can be.” Tonight’s three-course dinner is available by prepaid reservation only, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Cost is $30 plus tax and tip.
