A Critic's Pick: This Weekend, Stroll into Hudson's Downtown 140

There’s just something about the Christmas season that makes us want to reconnect with the past: to silence the cell phone, zip up the laptop, and simply stroll along an old-fashioned Main Street, where colored lights twinkle, treetops sparkle, and festive wreaths beckon from every doorway. In other words, we want to go to Hudson. We stroll; we shop; we gawk at all the tasteful ornamentation. And once all this Bedford Falls-style nostalgia has sufficiently primed our appetite, we cruise into Downtown 140, executive chef Shawn Monday’s warm, welcoming restaurant and wine bar across from the city’s decked out town square. Always a cozy destination, the restaurant is at its most lovely during the holidays, with poinsettias, candlelight, and an elegant little Christmas tree tucked into the tiny foyer. Plus, even the Grinch himself would dig the first-rate food -- an always evolving collection of small and not-so-small plates that take their inspiration from global pantries. Berkshire pork tenderloin satay, perhaps, with pineapple and roasted poblano peppers? Or maybe ahi tuna tartar tacos, with wasabi guacamole, sesame, and lime? Match any, or all, of your selections with something from the award-winning wine list, and see if you don’t feel merry and bright. -- Elaine T. Cicora
