It’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since Mickey Krivosh opened Around the Corner Saloon & Café (18616 Detroit Ave., 216-521-4413, atccafe.com) in Lakewood. Now a grandfather, Krivosh was just a broke kid back in 1974 when he rented a single storefront and tracked down a liquor license. When folks asked him where his new bar was located, he simply said, “it’s just around the corner.” And the rest is history.
“I was 23 years old, I had $2,000 to my name, my credit cards were maxed out, and my parents had to co-sign my loan,” Krivosh recalls with ease. “I was shaking behind the bar because I didn’t want my parents to lose their home. All my tips went to pay off my debts.”
A lifelong Lakewood resident and graduate of Lakewood High School, Krivosh furnished his bar with odds and ends purchased at auctions. After tasting Buffalo wings in Lake Chautauqua, he imported the concept to Cleveland — one of the very first operators to do so.
Over the years, Krivosh expanded his business, adding an adjoining space in 1984 and opening Lakewood’s first bar patio in 1986. In 2009, Krivosh and his son Ryan expanded yet again, this time into a 2,700-square-foot warehouse.
In 2011, Krivosh expanded his empire yet again, buying the former Three Birds restaurant across the street and rechristening it Georgetown. In 2013, Krivosh and his team opened VOSH, a night club and music venue built into an old warehouse immediately next door to Georgetown.
“It’s been 40 years of hard work,” adds Krivosh.
