The Williams boys get busy on the near West Side

Late-night noshers, rejoice! There's a new pig-out option in Ohio City. Opened earlier this month by chef Nate Williams, who for a dozen years worked in the fine-dining kitchens of Flying Fig, Bogtrotters Doorstep will dispense high-quality, hand-crafted sandwiches until 3 a.m. on weekends.

"I've always wanted to do something fun like this," says Williams. "And there was a need on the street for something late-night and quick."

Located in a separate side entryway to Old Angle Tavern, Bogtrotters will feature Williams' take on a half-dozen classic American sandwiches. The unifying theme, he says, is that all sandwiches include homemade au jus, and all meats are marinated, brined, and roasted in-house.

That includes the Philly, with roast beef, grilled onions, and cheese sauce; the Chicago, with roast beef, provolone, and peppers; Porkopolis, with pork loin, provolone, and sautéed rapini; and the Italian, with sausage, grilled onions and peppers, and provolone. All are built on seven-inch baguettes from On the Rise Bakery. Ask for "crunch" and the sandwich will be sprinkled with crushed potato chips. Each one costs $9.

The shop is designed mostly for carry-out, containing just two stools at a small rail. But customers are welcome to take their food into Old Angle to enjoy along with a beer.

As for the name? Williams says that a "doorstep" is Irish slang for a large sandwich, while "bogtrotter" refers to a bit of a rogue. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday. Find them at 1848 West 25th St. or call 216-861-5515.

DOG HAS ITS DAY: And that day is December 1 over at Happy Dog. That's the launch date of Underdog, a new basement hangout that's slated to include three additional pinball tables, classic arcade games, a projection TV, and a shuffleboard table.

"We were originally going to call it the Underdog Arcade," says co-owner Sean Watterson, who concedes that he and his partners — including Eric Williams, brother of Nate Williams — are eyeing the new spot as their personal rec room in addition to a little breathing room for the upstairs bar.

The kickoff happens at 10 p.m. on December 1, when the venerable dog house will offer up hamburgers — and those 50-plus beloved toppings — in honor of the new digs. The catch? The kitchen plans to turn out only 24 burgers each Thursday. "We just figured 24 was enough," says Watterson. "But if the demand's overwhelming, we might hike it up."

Before long, they'll break in the new room with weekly Saturday-afternoon monster movie screenings, pinball tournaments, and other fun.

SMART MOVE: It was only a matter of time until Barroco Grill expanded beyond its Lakewood border. The wonderful Latin-themed eatery specializing in arepas — our pick for the world's best drunk food — has been growing steadily in popularity since opening last spring. Now, owners say they will open a second outpost in — where else? — the Warehouse District.

Barroco Grill will occupy a portion of the former Lust space on West Sixth Street. Slightly larger than the original, the restaurant will serve lunch, dinner, and late-night offerings. A patio will allow for additional seating come warm weather. Watch for it early in 2012.

"I want to keep the same look and feel, the same sauces, but make it a little sharper and faster-paced to serve the lunch crowds," explains owner Juan Vergara.
