A new Ohio City bistro plans an early October opening

Like any major construction project, the new Crop Bistro & Bar has had its share of delays. But come Oct. 6, the Ohio City home for Steve Schimoler's popular Warehouse District bistro will be up and running.

To say the new space is an upgrade from the original (which opened in 2008 and closed last spring) is like saying your iPhone is better than a tin can and a string. Located in the United Bank Building at the corner of West 25th and Lorain, the restaurant will be one of the most striking in town, featuring three-story ceilings, dramatic architectural elements, and wide-open vistas.

The 10,000-square-foot room will be anchored on one end by a bar and lounge, and on the other by Schimoler's Local Crop market. In between will be a fully exposed state-of-the-art kitchen with counter seating for at least 20. All told, the bistro will seat 185 in the main room, plus many more in a massive basement vault.

"What a fuckin' view to work with," Schimoler says from his perch in his new kitchen. "I can see every table from here — a prerequisite of mine."

As for the menu, Schimoler says he's going to "pick up right where we left off," with tight seasonal menus, popular Sunday Suppers, and cherished faves like the savory popcorn appetizer.

New to Crop will be a bar menu as well as a café and marketplace — a retail operation that will serve coffee, pastries, and prepared foods throughout the day.

"You like the cheese you just ate at lunch? Buy a pound at the market, along with some bread and a bottle of wine," explains Schimoler. "If it's on the menu, it's in the market. If it's in the market, it's on the menu."

ALPHABET SOUP: Alan Glazen has just signed a lease to open an East Side outpost of his popular ABC Tavern. Slated to launch next spring, the new ABC will be located in the new Uptown project in University Circle, directly behind the Museum of Contemporary Art. Like the Ohio City original, this version will focus on good, affordable pub grub served in a laid-back setting.

Glazen and partners Randy Kelly and Linda Syrek are also gearing up for an early October opening of Viaduct Lounge, their champagne and raw-bar-themed eatery on the Superior Viaduct. The team also runs XYZ Tavern in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood.

BURGER MEISTER: Matt Harlan has been promoted within the Michael Symon Restaurants group to regional manager of B Spot Burgers, taking over for Greg MacLaren. Assuming Harlan's post as GM at Lolita will be Abram Noufer, who had been manager at Lola.

Harlan, who has worked with Symon for 14 years, will oversee the opening of the newest B Spot in the Horseshoe Casino. Also in the works are B Spots in Pittsburgh and Columbus; existing locations include Woodmere, Strongsville, Westlake, and Quicken Loans Arena.
