C-Notes' Picks of the Week

Every Monday, Scene calendar editor Cris Glaser provides a random but reliable sampling of things to do in the week ahead. For more options, log onto entertainment.clevescene.com. And check back Friday for C-Notes' Picks of the Weekend. Monday: In one of the most bizarre exhibits ever on display at 1point618gallery, Cleveland artist Judith Brandon continues her awareness campaign on the plight of African rhinos in Black & Blue. But this time, she doesn’t portray the mammoth mammals in their typical habitat, like the sub-Saharan jungles. Instead, Brandon depicts them in outer-space. And it's totally far out. The free display is up between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through March 30 at 6421 Detroit Avenue. Call 216-281-1618 for more information. Tuesday: Charles Haislah tries to live up to his rep as one of Cleveland’s most ubiqitous gay playboys as he works the Cocktails Cleveland bar in the club’s first-ever Battle of Celebrity Bartenders. Every Tuesday night until April 15, a guest mixologist will try to sell as many drinks as he can between 9 and 11:30 p.m. When the contest ends, the bar will match the cash-register total and donate it to charity. Haislah’s competing for – surprise! – the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Center of Greater Cleveland. Cocktails Cleveland is located at 9208 Detroit Avenue. Call 216-961-3115. Wedneday: Across town at gay-bar rival the Grid/Orbit, Darrin Bates emcees his inaugural Giggly Wiggly, with two hours of stand-up routines by Pasquale the Italian Comic and J.J. Johnson. They’re followed by house spins by Dj Twon until the club’s 2:30 a.m. closing time. In case you’re curious, Bates and crew are all straight. Go figure. The jokes start at 10 p.m., and $10 gets you in the door at 1427 Saint Clair Avenue. Call 216-623-0113. Thursday: Singles mingle to benefit the Cleveland Zoological Society during the agency’s fifth annual Animal Attractions at the Cleveland Metropark Zoo. For a $65 ticket, you can toss back all the wine and apps you can stomach while walking through the RainForest to check out the animals. You might even meet your Valentine’s Day date. The party runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at 3900 Wildlife Way. For details, call 216-661-6500.
