Sweet! Mobile Cupcakery

Dave Southerington had been a substitute teacher in suburban Cleveland in recent years, but as more and more schools announced layoffs, and more and more levies went down in flames, he did the only logical thing: He bought an old painting truck and turned it into a mobile cupcake shop.

"I came up with the idea to do this, and now I'm doing it," says the father from Bay Village, who sneaks in time with Sweet! between raising a son and daughter and coaching their soccer teams.

After a winter spent transforming the red rig into a vibrant blue powder puff, Southerington launched Sweet! in May of last year, pulling up at small-time West Side events. "I did a lot of little soccer tournaments and festivals," he says. This month's initial Walnut Wednesday was his first foray into urban service.

Unlike most trucks, no actual baking is done on Sweet!, though Southerington does handle all of his own baking in his commercial kitchen at Tower Deli downtown. That's where he whips up unique flavors such as Snickerdoodle, Buckeye, and Fudgsicle before taking them on the road.

Relatively modest — read: health conscious! — in size compared to the monster muffins of many cupcake houses, Sweet!'s creations sell for $2.50 each or six for $14.

"I found two popular things: food trucks and cupcakes," Southerington says. "And I kind of fused the two." — Justine Stump
