What and when and where to eat and drink this week

On Monday, April 29, Michelangelo's Italian Restaurant will host a Marchesi di Barolo Wine Dinner. If the thought of a Barolo-themed wine dinner in Little Italy sounds as dreamy to you as it does to us, make plans to attend this event. Vineyard owner Anna Abbona and her daughter Valentina will be on hand to discuss their wine, as well as the history of their mid-1800s estate. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the five-course dinner with wine pairings will kick off with an antipasto course of a thin-sliced air-cured beef, golden apples, sliced almonds and grappa-infused olive oil. The wine pour is Marchesi di Barolo Gavi 2010. Other courses include braised beef short rib with wild mushroom risotto and Barolo sauce paired with a Marchesi di Barolo Barolo 2007, and for dessert, a seductive chocolate mousse bomb. The cost is $50 per person. Reservations are required.

On Tuesday, April 30, Shinto in Strongsville offers Half-Price Sushi Day. This high-energy haunt dishes up classic Pan-Asian fare that manager Philip Borshell calls the "Shinto experience." On Tuesdays, starting at 11 a.m. and running clear until 10 p.m., Shinto offers its most popular items at 50-percent off the regular price. "Our Tuesdays have become like our Saturdays because of this amazing special," Borshell reports. An extensive assortment of nigiri, sashimi, traditional rolls and maki rolls make it hard not to leave here in a sushi coma. This promotion is offered throughout the restaurant, but if you're in the bar between 4 and 6:30 p.m. you'll enjoy $2 off cocktails, as well.

On Tuesday, April 30, Bistro 185 in the N. Collinwood neighborhood will host a Vegan Spring Dinner, a popular monthly event. "We have been doing vegan dinners for almost two years," states chef-owner Ruth Levine. "They are done monthly and have been extremely popular." The format is straightforward: three vegan courses for $30. This spring-themed version will begin with a light and refreshing soup, before moving on to a pasta dish with spring vegetables, and ending on a sweet note with a quintessential spring favorite: rhubarb and strawberry dessert. "We put a lot of effort into our vegan dinners to ensure that all the ingredients and components of the dinners adhere to the vegan lifestyle, which means no animal products or byproducts, such as butter, milk..." adds Levine. Reservations are required.

On Wednesday, May 1, Deagan's Kitchen and Bar in Lakewood will also host a vegetarian/vegan night, a weekly affair that runs from 5 to 10 p.m. "Vegetarian/Vegan Wednesdays have grown to be our second biggest weekday besides Taco Tuesday," explains owner Dan Deagan. The vegan and vegetarian specials change weekly and generally include a soup, two or three small plates, three or four entrees and a dessert. Some dishes have grown so popular, they graduated to the everyday menu. "The popularity of Wednesdays has prompted us to add vegan dishes to our dinner menu, brunch menu and dessert menu," adds Deagan. Follow them on Facebook to stay up to date on the items offered.

On Wednesday, May 1, Prosperity Social Club in Tremont hosts Old World Wednesdays. "People are proud of their heritage, diverse cultures, food and music," says owner Bonnie Flinner. To honor the hardworking Central and Eastern Europeans who settled around this near-west side neighborhood back in the 20s, Prosperity rolls out all the stops. Every Wednesday, chef Ed Kubitz dishes out authentic ethnic delights such as Hungarian stuffed cabbage, pierogies, cabbage and noodles, kielbasa, and potato pancakes with apple-cranberry chutney. Regional libations also are offered, including ethnic beers such as Lasko, Okocim, Staropramen and Weihenstephaner to beef up the already popular bar menu. Live polka music from 6 tp 9 p.m. featuring accordion legend Stan Mejac is sure to keep your toes a tappin' old-school style.
