Longtime baker and shop owner Michael Feigenbaum isn’t entirely certain what prompted CBS Early Show staffers to tap him and his wife Marika to give a strudel-making demo on live TV. But he’s glad they did. “I think they discovered us from our
Food Finds exposure on the Food Network,” says the owner of
Lucy’s Sweet Surrender in Shaker Heights. “It’s very cool!”
Approaching its 50th anniversary, the Buckeye Road bakery is the last remaining ethnic outpost in what was once home to the largest Hungarian population outside Eastern Europe. Feigenbaum bought the biz from founder Lucy Ortelecaen in 1994, and continues to make his tortes, cakes, pies, and famous strudels from scratch. The Feigenbaums also own and operate the recently opened Café Marika, in the Arts Collinwood building on Waterloo Road.
If you plan to tune in, just be sure not to blink. “The show will have us demonstrate how we stretch the dough and roll the strudel, and then we’ll be eating it,” Feigenbaum says. “I think we only have two minutes, so it’s going to be fast!”
