Mom's Day Your Way

Our picks for brunches that won’t break you.

Mother's Day brunch
If your mom birthed a brood of CEOs, by all means treat her to a Mother's Day blowout this Sunday at a chichi dining room. On the other hand, if Mom's kids work for a living, here are some suggestions for casual spots that won't bust the budget:

Downtown, Waterstreet Grill (1265 West Ninth Street) will serve brunch from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The most expensive item on the menu -- "Mom's Pot Roast" -- tops out at $10. Call 216-619-1600 for reservations. Or go a little more upscale at the venerable John Q's Steakhouse (55 Public Square); the ample brunch buffet ($23.95/adults, $10.95/kids under 10) runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; snag a seat at 216-861-0900.

Westward, OPA! on 25th (1834 West 25th Street) serves brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; most items are $9-$11, and Mom gets a complimentary mimosa. Reservations are a must; 216-272-2570. In Lakewood, Around the Corner Saloon and Café (18616 Detroit Avenue, 216-521-4413) offers a mostly $10-and-under brunch menu that features everything from steak and eggs to marzipan-cream cheese French toast; hours are 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., reservations accepted only for parties larger than 10.

East Siders can celebrate Mom's Day at Mom's Diner (28149 Miles Road, Orange Village, 440-248-6669). All-day breakfast begins at 7 a.m.; meals won't set you back more than $10. Or help Mom relive her youth, at '60s throwback Tommy's (1824 Coventry Road, Cleveland Heights, 216-321-7757). Inexpensive breakfasts are served from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; dinner hours run until 9 p.m.

Finally, head out to the country for Park City Diner (8111 Rockside Road, Valley View), on picturesque property beside the Towpath Trail. It's buffets all day, for breakfast ($12.95 adults/$7.95 kids), lunch, and dinner (both $21.95/$10.95); prime rib is featured during the two later spreads. Call 216-328-0575 for reservations.

Taste this . . . There's still time to snag tickets for Scene's annual Tasteful Affair, May 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. The 21-and-over event will feature live music, complimentary spirits, and fine food from local hotspots like One Walnut, Momocho, and Ruth's Chris Steak House. Tickets cost $50 each; order online at clevescene.com/taste, or call 216-721-5722, extension 445.
