We’re just days away from opening day for Dave’s Cosmic Subs
in Ohio City, says owner Eddie DeTomaso.
“We’re real close, real close,” he says, adding that he hopes to open the doors by the end of the month. “It looks real nice inside.”
DeTomaso also is the current owner of the original Dave’s shop in Chagrin Falls. Before purchasing that store from founder Dave Lombardy three years ago, he worked there for eight years. He also worked in the shop in high school.
The 1,000-square-foot shop has taken over the spot previously occupied by Piccadilly Artisan Yogurt (2547 Lorain Ave.), which sits between Crop Bistro and Bonbon Café. Construction delays pushed back the opening from its expected spring debut.
Fans of the sub shops can expect the same look, feel and menu, says DeTomaso.
“A Dave’s is a Dave’s is a Dave’s,” he says. “The whole idea is that you want it to be the same everywhere.”
That means a menu of 30-odd sandwiches and a music-themed, memorabilia-covered interior. In addition to the rock-and-roll pictures shellacing the walls, the concrete floor was finished in a tie-dye pattern. The store, which DeTomaso describes as being slightly larger than the original in Chagrin, will have seating for about 25 at tables and along a rail that looks out onto Lorain Avenue.
“It’s not huge,” he says. “The majority of the business is carry-out.”
DeTomaso says that he was recruited by neighborhood stakeholders to open a shop in Ohio City, a decision he does not regret at all.
“We’re really excited about the neighborhood,” he notes. “People keep coming in and asking when we’re opening up. We’re getting a lot of positive feedback.”
