Platform Beer’s Guest Brewer Ferndock to Tap Holiday Ale at Special Event

In just a few weeks, Kyle Roth and Ferndock Brewing will complete their tenure as Platform Beer’s inaugural Incubator Guest Brewer. Right now, hopeful new home brewers are sending in their applications to take Roth’s spot.

Roth was chosen as “groupie” number one thanks to a string of brewing successes that caught the attention of Platform owners Paul Benner, Justin Carson and Shawn Yasaki. Ferndock’s Northcoast Pale Ale and The English Way English Pale both reached the finals of the AHA National Homebrew Competition.

On Friday, November 28th (Black Friday), Platform (4125 Lorain Ave., 216-202-1386, platformbeerco.com) will open early for a special tapping of Ferndock’s second release, Oh Snap Holiday Ale. A classic take on the Christmas Ale genre, the beer is brewed with cinnamon, ginger and honey. The ABV is seven percent. The recipe has been a favorite among friends and family, says Roth, and has claimed two Gold Medals in recent competitions.

"Scaling this recipe up to three barrels was a bit of a leap of faith,” explains Roth. “We held back a little on the spices as to not go overboard. The result is a prominent cinnamon and ginger aroma but more subdued flavor. Having Shaun's guidance on how far to take the spices in fermentation was greatly appreciated."

The beer is not expected to last long. Doors open at noon and the beer will be tapped at 1 p.m. Food will be provided by chef Cesare Avallone of Zinc Brasserie in Sandusky, who will be selling from 1 to 5 p.m.

While in the neighborhood, home brewers should check out the new location for The Cleveland Brew Shop (4146 Lorain Ave., 216-574-2271), which relocated from Tremont to a storefront across the street. They will be featuring specials for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.
