If you’re an East Sider, you likely already know about Cedar Green Wine & Cheese (2179 Green Rd., 216-381-5350, cedargreenwine.com), which has been on the scene for almost 23 years. Regardless one's zip code, this place is worth checking out. The unassuming strip mall setting might cause some to overlook the shop, but the large, comfortable and informal space is a great place to pick up some amazing bargains on wine.
Owner Michael Resnick is always on the lookout for great deals on wine, typically stocking some 2,000 bottles. “Our big thing is, we buy deals, closeouts and overruns from distributors,” he explains. He proudly shows off his latest score, several cases of Bordeaux that he procured from a distributor and that he plans to sell for a deep discount over retail. “If you’re looking for something cool to buy, we have it,” he says.
The shop also has an impressive beer selection, with roughly 200 types in stock. Build your own six-pack to go or enjoy one of the eight beers on tap (around $5 each) on site. There’s seating for 40 people in the front of the store, which is where they hold their popular closeout shows, held three times a year. These events always sell out as they provide a great way to sample as many as 50 wines — and snack on some appetizers — for just $15. The next show is February 22.
Bottles of wine can also be enjoyed on premises, with all bottles over $10 retail including a reasonable $5 corkage fee. Sit at a table or in the comfortable soft seating area and pair that wine with some dark chocolate Rice Krispies treats or some peppermint bark. If you want something more substantial, order from any of the restaurants in the shopping plaza and have it delivered.
On your way out, pick up some cheese from the small selection of popular varieties like Irish Dubliner cheddar, smoked gouda, Jarlsburg, havarti and Maytag blue, all of which make an easy accompaniment to that bottle of wine.
