Tokyo Tuesdays to Bring Ramen to Underdog at the Euclid Tavern

Everybody knows that Happy Dog is the place to go in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood for great burgers. Sure, the bar is mainly celebrated as a happy hot dog shop, where diners load up gourmet weenies with all sorts of weird and wonderful toppings. But on Thursday nights, the Underdog at Happy Dog – the lower-level game room and lounge – hosts a popular “burger night,” when guests pour in for a limited number of burgers sold on a first come, first served basis.

But what about Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern (11625 Euclid Ave., 216-231-5400,

“Eric [Williams] and I wanted to try something different out east – a little more college friendly and a bit more exciting than burgers,” explains chef Dan Garcia. “I've always had a love of Asian food and culture and have a background in it. Plus, it seems really hard to find just a solid, straightforward bowl of ramen.”

Ramen night at the Happy Dog Euclid Tavern will commence Tuesday December 30th and run weekly. Like the burger nights out west, the ramen will be sold only in the Underdog lounge and is limited in number and sold on a first come, first served basis.

On Tokyo Tuesdays, as it will be called, diners will have a choice of two ramen styles: one pork and one vegetarian. The bowls will come fully assembled; no customization procedure like at burger night. The traditional pork version will feature housemade broth, soy-braised pork shoulder, 6-minute egg, nori, scallion and pickled ginger. The veggie version will be built around a kombu dashi broth with Swiss chard, soy-pickled mushrooms, pickled ginger, nori and scallion. The noodles will be coming from Ohio City Pasta. The cost will be $6 per bowl.

“We’re trying to keep the price low,” says Garcia. “I mean, it's not really the Happy Dog if you're breaking the bank on food. I know a lot of places do $8-10 bucks a bowl, with fancy stuff like bacon and egg or beef brisket. We just want to do straightforward Sapporo-style noodles. Something the neighborhood can just come in and enjoy.”

Oh, and sing a little drunken karaoke with friends, which will accompany Tokyo Tuesdays.
