5-24: Keane

keane.jpgThis British trio hit it big five years ago with Hopes and Fears and “Somewhere Only We Know,” a piano ballad that splits the difference between Coldplay and one of those disposable groups you hear on Grey’s Anatomy every week. For their latest album, Perfect Symmetry, Keane reach back to the early and mid ’80s for synth-heavy pop tunes that wouldn’t be out of place on The Breakfast Club soundtrack (doesn’t “Spiralling” sounds exactly like a Simple Minds song?). But their legacy will be the big, sweeping ballads they launched their career with. They’re kinda like a U.K. version of the Fray: likable but anonymous lads who make uplifting music for troubling times. And if good-looking TV docs can snog along to ’em, all the better. Keane play Time Warner Cable Amphitheater (351 Canal Rd., 216.522.4822) — along with Mat Kearney and the Helio Sequence — as part of the Great American Rib Cook-Off and Music Festival at 9:15 p.m. General admission is free with Cook-Off ticket ($7); reserved tickets are $25. — Michael Gallucci
