5-30: John T. Carey AIDS Walk

Posted By on Wed, May 27, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Events have a natural lifespan, and the John T. Carey AIDS Walk, which raises money for 10 local agencies that provide services for people with AIDS, has come to its end. Times were different when the walk was founded in 1992. AIDS was still a death sentence then, and friends were losing friends every week. That gave the walk an urgency that diminished with the advent in the mid ’90s of drug cocktails that allowed for long-term survival. And that was also before the calendar was crammed from April to October with walks, rides, bikes, skates, swims and cartwheels for every charity under the sun. So the organizers, noting the diminished support, have declared this year’s walk to be the last and will be looking to try something new in the future. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at Wade Oval in University Circle; walkers step-off is at 10 a.m. Go to cleveland.com/aidswalk or call 216.621.0766 ext 275 for more information. — Anastasia Pantsios
