6/6: Object Lesson at CSU Art Gallery

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2009 at 9:00 AM

Artist Joan Deveney, better known around town as Joan of Art, has been assembling bits of broken household items and other fractured pieces into ceremonial — even sacred — works for years. Appropriating things like shattered glass, mirrors and china raises all kinds of questions about art itself, like: Do they represent broken things? Or are they simply raw material, like any piece of mosaic or sculpture? Deveney, Tim Haas and Nick R. Square will explore the formal and contextual significance of using “real” objects in their work in a gallery talk at 2 p.m. at the Cleveland State University Art Gallery (2307 Chester Ave., 216.687.2103). It’s free. — Gill
