6/6: Viva Voce at Musica

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Viva Voce’s career can now be cleaved into two distinct halves. The Portland duo — married couple Kevin and Anita Robinson — spent their early years perfecting amiable pop with a distinct psychedelic edge, populating Lovers, Lead the Way and The Heat Can Melt Your Brain with uptempo but intricate numbers that showed off a seemingly effortless way with melody. Since then, things have gotten a bit darker: Get Yr Blood Sucked Out (from 2006) showcased Anita’s distinctive guitar workouts, as well as moody pieces like the manifesto “We Do Not Fuck Around.” After an extended break (the couple formed another band, the twangy Blue Giant, and Anita toured with the Shins as a backing singer), Viva Voce return with Rose City, which marks the second dark chapter in the band’s new book. It also marks the group’s metamorphosis into a four-piece, with the addition of full-timers Evan Railton and Corrina Repp. New Zealand jitter-pop band Cut Off Your Hands are also on this bill. They’re currently dealing with some personnel issues, but nothing that will destroy the momentum created by their recent buzz-worthy debut. The show starts at 9 p.m. at Musica (51 E. Market St., 330.374.1114). Tickets: $10. — Chris Drabick
