6/7: Cemeteries in Pictures

ff09/1243974667-cemeteries.jpgIt’s hard to go wrong pointing a camera in a cemetery. Death rubs shoulders with blossoming trees as the sun shines through them. Plus, all those dignified monuments fill the place with various moods, lines and textures. So when Ohio Cemetery Alliance prez Vicki Vigil was looking for a way to draw more people to cemeteries and emphasize their status as public parks, she asked photographer Herb Ascherman to judge a photo show. “We wanted to demystify [cemeteries] as sacred or holy ground and redefine them for public use,” says Ascherman. For the past several years, Vigil and Ascherman have put together the Ohio Cemetery Alliance Photography Exhibit, which includes nothing but photos snapped inside, yep, Ohio cemeteries. Ascherman says the 75-plus entries this year fall into three different groups: “basic landscape; specific, interesting, or unusual monuments; and people in the park.” He chose 45 photos from the entries, which represent cemeteries all over Cuyahoga County, as well as Johnson’s Island, Cincinnati, Marietta and elsewhere. The show opens with a reception at 1:30 p.m. at the Brecksville Library (9089 Brecksville Rd.) and hangs through June 30. It’s free. — Michael Gill
