6/16: Rupa & the April Fishes at Wilbert's

It’s hard enough making a career as a singer-songwriter. When you sing your songs in a foreign language, it’s doubly difficult. But Rupa & the April Fishes are beating the odds. The San Francisco group just wrapped recording their second album, which is due in the fall, and are heading out on a summer tour. They’re known for blending seemingly contradictory sounds and creating new ones out of the mix. Check out “La Pêcheuse,” which sounds like it originated in Latin American (especially the guitar), but its lyrics are in French. Rupa seamlessly combines these disparate cultures and, best of all, it sounds completely natural. The self-proclaimed boundary-smashing and global agit-pop group will play songs its 2008 debut, Extraordinary Rendition, and plenty of new tunes when they stop by Wilbert’s (812 Huron Rd., 216.902.4663) at 8:30 tonight. Tickets are $10 advance, $12 at the door. — Julia Kazar
