6/17: The Juan MacLean at the Grog Shop

Posted By on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 11:00 AM

Like his record-company boss and musical bedfellow James Murphy, John MacLean makes jittery electro-pop for groove-minded hipsters — not hollow-eyed club-hoppers looking for the latest Saturday-night jam. On The Future Will Come, their second album, MacLean and his self-named group flicker through DFA-approved songs that aren’t as alienated or as alienating as they seem on first listen. You can thank Nancy Whang for that — she sings lead on the album’s most accessible cuts. But the MacLean’s techno-disco thump isn’t nearly as warm as Murphy’s work with LCD Soundsystem. The Future Will Come’s best tracks lay down hurdles on their way to the dance floor — like the percussive thumps on the title tune or the wavy synths that stab away at “Accusations.” But the Juan MacLean’s greatest moment, and the one you gotta stick around to see live, is “Happy House,” which stretches out for more than 10 minutes, as MacLean and crew build an electro-pop tower of sound into one of the decade’s mightiest dance epics. The Field and djplasticefx open at 8 p.m. at the Grog Shop (2785 Euclid Heights Blvd., 216.321.5588) at 8 p.m. Tickets: $10 in advance, $12 day of show. — Michael Gallucci
