7/10: Jimmy Webb at the Beachland

Posted By on Wed, Jul 8, 2009 at 8:00 AM

You might not really know who Jimmy Webb is, but you surely have heard the songs he’s penned over the years for artists like Frank Sinatra, Isaac Hayes, Donna Summer and Glen Campbell, who scored a major hit with his “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” This Oklahoma-born songwriter is considered one of the finest tunesmiths of his generation. Webb has also maintained a steady if underrated career as a performer and a recording artist since the release of “MacArthur Park,” a seven-minute opus initially offered to the Association. The song ultimately became a hit for Gladiator/Harry Potter actor Richard Harris. Webb’s stardom is mostly behind the scenes. That hasn’t stopped him from playing live, though — accompanied by his own piano and surprising audiences that were probably not aware that songs they’ve loved for years were written by this long-haired gentleman. Chris Castle opens at 8 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $28 advance, $30 day of show. — Ernest Barteldes
