7/16: Deer Tick at the Beachland

Posted By on Tue, Jul 14, 2009 at 2:29 PM

When it comes to band nomenclature, simple is often best. Singer-songwriter John Joseph McCauley III had just dissolved the duo My Other Face when he found a deer tick on his head while camping. So he started a band and came up with its moniker at the same time. Before McCauley settled on the current lineup, Deer Tick featured a revolving-door membership, leading some to believe that the band was a solo project (none of the new Ticks appear on the group’s 2007 debut, War Elephant). After going through a number of touring ensembles, McCauley assembled drummer Dennis Michael Ryan, Ryan’s bassist half-brother C.R. and guitarist Andrew Tobiassen, and began work on Deer Tick’s sophomore album, Born on Flag Day. Deer Tick don’t much care for the alt-country and freak-folk tags they’ve been saddled with, so you know what you can call them? A band. Dawes and the Magpies open at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Tavern (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $10. — Brian Baker
