7/23: Cass McCombs at the Beachland

Posted By on Tue, Jul 21, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Singer-songwriter Cass McCombs converts musical peers and esoteric critics alike in a single listen. McCombs has seemingly stitched his sound together from the most potent bits of Nick Drake, Tom Waits, the Everly Brothers and T Bone Burnett, but then turns it all on its head by not sounding like any of them directly, making him an astonishingly original artist. Within that framework, McCombs is a moodily evocative melody maker and a poetically literary teller of tales — a classic troubadour (emphasis on the dour) with a darkly mad streak. McCombs’ fourth album, the just released Catacombs, is both reaffirmation and expansion of everything he’s done to date and is, in a word, brilliant. The Walkmen headline and Coffinberry starts things off at 9 p.m. at the Beachland Ballroom (15711 Waterloo Rd., 216.383.1124). Tickets: $14 advance, $16 day of show. — Brian Baker
