7/24: Flowers and Phrases at Local Girl Gallery

7e2e/1247860311-seacow.jpgBetty Lou Curatolo’s extreme close-up photos of flowers straddle the line between sensual portraiture and abstraction. Her lilies have something in common with fireworks, their petals streaked with color that radiates from the center. For Flowers and Phrases, she teams up with her 17-year-old niece Barbie Curatolo, who paints childlike visual puns on phrases like “Sea Cow,” which features an underwater cow, decked out in scuba gear, right down to swim fins. The show opens with a reception from 6-9 tonight at Local Girl Gallery (16106 Detroit Ave., Lakewood, 216.228.1802). It continues through August 8. It’s free. — Michael Gill
