8/7: The Ragbirds at the Wincester

Posted By on Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 11:39 AM

“Folk rock” is often used to describe a narrow alley between early Dylan and the Byrds. But in the case of Michigan quintet the Ragbirds, it encompasses a planetary expanse that includes world music, American roots, Celtic folk, Eastern modal and gypsy overtones. Frontwoman Erin Zindle’s vocals veer from willowy to smoky over vibrant rhythmic arrangements, suggesting a combination of Over the Rhine and Peter Gabriel. In addition to singing, Zindle also lends a hand on banjo, mandolin, violin and accordion, leading the capering musical festivities, full of grace and sprightly playfulness. It’s energetic enough to inspire a jig or two and groovy enough for jam enthusiasts. What’s more, Zinler’s lyrics are thoughtful and provocative — not the mushy tapioca some purvey. The Ragbirds release their new album, Finally Almost Ready, later this month, so expect to hear a few tracks from it when they play the Winchester (12112 Madison Ave., 216.226.5681) at 9 p.m. Tickets: $10. — Chris Parker
