8/13: Feast of the Assumption

Posted By on Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 3:57 PM

Does it sound like a lot of fun to eat a plateful of cavatelli while sitting on a street curb as hordes of people step over you? To the thousands of Clevelanders who flock to Little Italy every year for the Feast of the Assumption — popularly known as just “the Feast” — it sure does. Most probably aren’t too sure of the religious significance of the Feast, which marks the taking up of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Holy Rosary Church (12021 Mayfield Rd., 216.421.2995,, which started the event 111 years ago, celebrates with a solemn mass at 10 a.m. Saturday — the actual feast day — followed at 11:15 by a procession. The rest of the time, the churchyard and all of Mayfield Road (from the Rapid station to the hill) will be filled with food, games, art and music from 6-11 a.m. today, 6-midnight Friday, and noon-midnight Saturday and Sunday. The feast ends on Sunday with a candlelight procession and fireworks. It’s free, so you can eat a lot of pasta. — Anastasia Pantsios
