8/27: Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s at Musica

Frontman Richard Edwards must’ve recognized the throngs crowding into the chamber-pop scene, so he chose to give Margot’s second release a moodier, atmospheric sway, plying instruments with more finesse and discretion. While the Indianapolis eight-piece still unveil richly layered moments, Not Animal — and its companion record Animal! — sidestep the precious twee baroque-ialism that characterizes the genre from Belle & Sebastian to the Decemberists. The follow-up to their sterling debut arrived in two pieces, thanks to friction with their record company over songs, but both Animals strike a less frothy stance. The slow-burn guitar opening and echoing drones of “Love Song for a Schuba’s Bartender” suggest Radiohead. So does Edwards’ reedy, willowy tenor, while the Rhodes piano and ahh-ing backing harmonies of “Real Naked Girls” contribute to the track’s shuffling late-night shimmer. The vibrant sinew carrying the music’s heart-heavy spirit is better witnessed with this leaner approach. The group recently began recording its next album, so expect to hear a few new tunes when it plays Musica (51 E. Market St., Akron, 330.374.1114) at 8 p.m. Speedbumps and the Lighthouse & the Whaler open. Tickets: $10 advance, $12 day of show. — Chris Parker
