8/28: Bocce Cup

Posted By on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 2:12 PM

The 26th annual Pat O’Brien Chevrolet Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce brings together 84 teams from the Great Lakes region that take this Italian variation on lawn bowling very seriously. Starting at 6 p.m. today and ending Sunday evening, competition will be going on continuously on seven courts, with the top 16 teams splitting $15,000 prize money. But it’s not just about bocce: It’s also a celebration of Italian culture and a fun family gathering. Cavelliera Reale plays Italian music from 8-11 tonight, and an Italian Cultural Exposition from noon-3 tomorrow includes a wine-making workshop, an Italian cooking demonstration and a performance by the Italian Choral Group. Pieces of Eight bring classic-rock from 8-midnight tomorrow, and Jungle Terry will be on hand Sunday to amuse the kids. For those who find bocce too arcane, the event also brings back the cornhole tournament it started last year. Italian and American food will be available throughout the weekend. It all takes place at the Wickliffe Italian-American Club (29717 Euclid Ave.), and it’s all free. — Anastasia Pantsios
