9/5: Mike Huckaby at Touch

Posted By on Thu, Sep 3, 2009 at 8:00 AM

As far as DJs go, Mike Huckaby has never been high profile, despite more than a decade of constant gigging and his visibility in the Detroit music scene. Whenever he’s not DJing, Huckaby manages the flow of dance records that funnels through the Record Time music shop to the rest of Detroit’s DJs. Still, his name hasn’t developed the rep of fellow Motor City spinners like Theo Parrish or Kenny Dixon Jr., who are considered the best of the city’s Third Wave of techno jocks. But Huckaby’s increasing production and remix output over the past few years has inched him closer to the limelight. Reworking tunes for producers both foreign (Vladislav Delay, Pole) and domestic (Deepchord, Juan Atkins), Huckaby now sits beside Parrish and Dixon as a leading purveyor of Detroit house. Huckaby combines the machine-like precision of classic Detroit techno (and its chorus of Dopplered thwacks, hisses and burbles) with moodier, more soulful accents that are common in deep house. The result is a sound that’s both minimal yet melodic and resonates throughout Huckaby’s DJ mixes and productions. Huckaby’s sets typically swing skillfully from sleek, dubby selections to haunting vocal cuts and right on through to funky bangers that get the crowd jacking in classic techno style. He performs at 10 p.m. at Touch Supperclub (2710 Lorain Ave., 216.216.631.5200). Tickets: $5. — Steve Boughton
