9/6: Tony Furtado at Waterloo Cafe

Posted By on Fri, Sep 4, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Virtuoso banjo player Tony Furtado has busted through several barriers during his long career. Some may see his main instrument (he also plays electric and acoustic slide guitar) as one used primarily in country or folk music, but Furtado has been able to take it to other places, including jazz, rock and blues. Through the years, he’s recorded with Taj Mahal, Eric Johnson and Keith Richards, among others. Furtado often performs solo, but when he’s backed by drums and bass, his music takes on a more jazzy sound. You’ll hear some of his favorite songs in concert: Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” the Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and Elton John’s “Take Me to the Pilot” were all on 2007’s Thirteen. You never know what to expect at a Tony Furtado show, but one thing is certain: There’ll be plenty of improvised soloing and great guitar riffs. He performs at 8 p.m. at the Waterloo Café (15601 Waterloo Rd., 216.862.4895). Tickets: $10. — Ernest Barteldes
