9/12: Gripped Canvas at (art)ificial Gallery

Posted By on Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 8:00 AM

A skateboard deck was never intended to be a canvas, but that hasn’t stopped skaters from doodling on them and covering them with stickers. And it sure hasn’t stopped manufacturers from tapping graphic artists to give decks some style right off the rack. Rich Cihlar hosted a skate-deck art show at his (art)ificial Gallery earlier this year. Red Bull reps liked what they saw and helped set up the new Gripped Canvas exhibit. “They gave us 60 decks to give to Cleveland artists, and they’re building a panel of three judges, including Derek Hess, to choose 30 that will be included in the show,” says Cihlar. The judges will then choose a winner, which will be reproduced by Red Bull as a limited-edition deck. The show opens with a reception from 6-9 p.m. at (art)ificial Gallery (17020 Madison Ave., Lakewood, 216.227.8440). Admission is free. — Michael Gill
