9/12: Sparx City Hop

Posted By on Wed, Sep 9, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Downtown Cleveland isn’t a single neighborhood; it’s a honeycomb of many, each growing in its own distinct way. Today, the Downtown Cleveland Alliance sponsors its 7th annual Sparx City Hop, with an eye on more than just the core downtown area and the galleries that were the main focus of previous years. Two trolleys leaving from a hub on East 4th Street in the Gateway area will make loops starting at noon, with the east loop covering the Quadrangle, the St. Clair Superior Art Quarter, Asiatown and Midtown. The west loop will stop in the Warehouse District, Tremont, Ohio City and the Flats at the Old Superior Viaduct. Visitors can browse more than 60 galleries and artist studios, check out the Tremont Arts and Cultural Fest in Lincoln Park and the Sparx Classic Car Show on West 6th Street, take in an outdoor screening of The Dark Knight at 8 p.m. on West 6th and listen to musicians play free sidewalk concerts. There’ll also be sidewalk chalk stations and a “Bad Art Day” at Spaces Gallery (2220 Superior Viaduct) for those who want to get hands-on. Many restaurants are offering specials. The west loop runs until midnight, so you can even bar-hop (the east loop stops at 7 p.m.). Free trolley passes (and more info) are available at cleveland.com/sparx. — Anastasia Pantsios
