9/19: Fiddler on the Roof at Beck Center

Posted By on Mon, Sep 14, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Because of the current economic climate, Beck Center for the Arts is keeping its Studio Theater dark for a season. It’s also booking more familiar titles on its main stage. Still, artistic director Scott Spence aims to keep things interesting. “Opening with Fiddler is a bit of an anomaly for us,” he admits. “The whole season came together to help get Beck’s audiences through the economic crisis. So we’ll be a little more traditional — pun intended — than in the past.” Former Kalliope Stage artistic director Paul Gurgol — a specialist in adventurous musicals — directs, even though he hasn’t helmed a show since Kalliope closed more than a year ago. “It wouldn’t have happened without the right people,” says Spence. Fiddler on the Roof opens at 8 p.m. at Beck Center for the Arts (17801 Detroit Ave., 216.521.2540). It runs through October 18. Tickets: $20-$31. — Michael Gill
